Partners in Science and Love: Marie and Pierre Curie
Marie Curie and husband Pierre Curie were partners in the pursuit of both love and science. The pair met Sorbonne University in Paris. Enamored by Marie’s intense passion in the field of science and discovery Pierre proposed to Marie. Refusing at first, upon Pierre’s insistence that even if he were reduced to teaching French in her native Poland he would follow her anywhere, Marie accepted. The two would go on to be pioneers in the field radiation and came to coin the term “radioactive.” The couple was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1903.
